Advance Directives Share

Advance directives are documents which appoint someone to handle financial or medical affairs in the event you become disabled, incompetent or otherwise unable to handle your own affairs. Many guardianship would not have been necessary if advance directives had been in place. A Power of Attorney is a document in which one person (the principal) appoints another person (the agent) to handle his or her financial affairs and affairs relating to property.  A Health Care Proxy (in New York) is a document in which a principal appoints an agent to make health care decisions if the principal is unable to do so.   A Health Care Proxy or similar document would have prevented much of the litigation in the Terri Schiavo case in Florida.
